Extending backward into the unknown helps you to confront your fears when life presents you with an unknown quantity. Backbends open the chest, so they are uplifting. Opening the chest promotes better breathing and the heart centre expands to bring a joyful vitality into your life. "Atmarati Yoga is many things. A method, a path, a process, a state of being. More than the ability to twist yourself into a position resembling an old mariner's knot, yoga is a state of mind."

"If your yoga practice gives you a sense of expansion and joy, then it is the right yoga practice for you."

"While our minds tend to drift off into thoughts of the past or future, our bodies exist only in the present moment. There is only the now."
"A body can't exist in the past or the future. Yoga practice encourages your awareness of the body. Coming back to your body will draw the mind back to the present. Then, worries drop away and this is one of the reasons people find yoga so refreshing. When this happens, there is nothing to work towards, there is nowhere to go. There are no 'shoulds' or 'musts'. There is only the reality of the present moment, and the present moment is all we really possess." "As you learn about your centre in a yoga pose, just like in life, you practice finding your centre in other parts of your life. Yoga is learning to come back to yourself. It's finding your limits, expanding your boundaries. It's being able to relax back into yourself. It's when you re-remember who you really are but, caught up in the whirlwind of a fast paced life, had forgotten."

"Any practice that helps you centre yourself is important. When you operate from a space that is close to your centre, it is easier to be calmer and more focused. Being off balance is a huge source of stress. When things go wrong when you are already off balance, it is like swimming against a strong tide. The farther out you are, the harder it is to swim to shore. Yet, distractions and sensory stimulation often cause you to look outward rather than gazing inward. The real change in life is to manage to stay 'with' yourself while at the same time interacting with others, to respond appropriately to people and events while maintaining a sense of connection to yourself."
"Truly 'having' anything else is just an illusion. This is true even if only for an instant. Each time you come to the present moment, you drop a certain amount of baggage. You may pick it up again shortly after, but the point is you have practiced letting it go. In time you will get better at letting go, and be able to drop the stress more often and for longer periods. In this respect, yoga is like life training, and a fabulous tool for transformation."

"Being off-balance doesn't feel good. On a physical level, and in life, feeling like you might topple at any time feels neither safe nor comfortable. Feeling integrated is completely different to feeling split, disharmonious and out of kilter. One of the reasons yoga is so popular now is that it is a tool which helps us feel harmonious, whole and complete."

Reclining Hand to Toe Sequence: This posture stretches the hamstring muscles, limbers the legs and hip joints, and releases the lower back.

Firefly Balance: Like all the arm balancing postures, Firefly Balance strengthens the wrists, arms, and shoulders. It also works into the hips and gives a very strong stretch to the hamstring muscles.

Revolved Side Angle Stretch: As a standing pose, this twisting posture is very grounding. The twist, which requires a high degree of flexibility, strongly squeezes the abdominal organs.
