YOGA - A system for Harmonizing the Mind, Body and Spirit

YOGA - A SYSTEM FOR HARMONISING THE MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT
(Parragon 2001)

A beginner's guide to Hatha Yoga

Back bends stretch the abdominal area, increasing the blood supply to the kidneys, pancreas and reproductive system.

AWARENESS, FOCUS AND BEING PRESENT

"When the asana is performed with full awareness, it develops into something far greater than just a fitness regime. Work with integrity. Become absorbed in the subtle sensations of the body. From observing your hamstring in a forward bend, for example, spread your awareness to the whole leg, then to your lower back without forgetting the original point, radiate your awareness out until it touches the entire body."

ON RESTING

"Nobody would expect a car driven continuously, at high speed, not to deteriorate. Yet many of us expect it from our bodies. Relaxation during asana practice allows the body space to give the mind feedback. Awareness and intuition will develop. Until the art of relaxation within the postures is developed, rest when necessary between postures."

ON INVERSIONS

"When you feel stuck, or in need of inspiration, it helps to see the world from another angle. Releasing the pressure of an everyday reality - gravity - can help lighten the mind too. An upside down position is an opportunity to consider things from a different point of view."

As you open your chest, expand your heart centre in this pose.

This pose is invaluable for relieving tight hips and shoulders. Poses we find most challenging are often the ones with the most to offer us.

This pose gives a great stretch along the whole side of your body. If your head feels uncomfortable looking up in this pose, or the other standing poses, then look straight ahead.
