Pain is a feeling triggered by the nervous system. It is your body’s reaction to trauma, including physical injury, overuse, stress or even emotional upset. It is the number one reason that people seek acupuncture for pain relief. This is because Chinese medicine gives effective and lasting relief without surgery or medication. It may be sharp or dull, steady or intermittent, localised –such as in back pain – or all over (such as in muscle aches from the flu)
TCM assesses the symptoms to find the cause. E.g., whether the pain is worse in cold, wet or windy weather; worse after activity or rest, whether recent or long term, and is treated accordingly. E.g. a warming technique called moxa- where a cylinder of compressed herbs is ignited and held over the site -is used for cold affected pain. A gentle electric current may be used to strengthen the effect of the needles. Certain points that are not located near the site of pain are known to be beneficial such as ‘the master point of tendon/muscle problems’ is also used. Generally needles are inserted in the local area and also at a distal point on the same meridian.
Chronic pain is often due to an underlying cause such as ‘arthritis’. This word encompasses the whole body as it means ‘inflammation of a joint’. TCM uses the formerly mentioned diagnostic tools to treat. Diet and other environmental factors also taken into consideration, e.g. whether the patient lives in a damp place, walks in the wind, eats too much salt or spicy food or is very stressed and needs to relax. Advice is given on how to deal with these factors.
Pain can be a result of stagnation, which means that your energy is not flowing correctly (a pinched nerve). Thus some areas are flooded with excess energy creating painful pressure, while other areas may be deprived of energy, causing weakness. Acupuncture removes the obstruction so that the energy can begin flowing correctly and then the pain goes away.
The painful area is first treated through some massage to give quick symptom relief, then acupuncture to treat the underlying imbalances that led to the pain. Finally the acupuncturist can provide lifestyle advice to prevent reoccurrence.
